I make stuff

And I've worked at places making stuff!

Experience

As a kid, I always had a passion for computers and technology. I remember accessing the internet for the first time through dial-up, and installing software using CD-ROMs. My grandparents always needed me to do some kind of computer repair whenever I came to visit, and all those driver installations and bloatware cleanup eventually sparked an interest in programming. My first programming course was in college with Python, and I remember making it add two numbers together and printing the result. It made me realize how stupid computers were 🤣

Here's to my long and storied career making computers just a little less stupid, one line of code at a time!

West Coast Labour Systems

Junior Software Developer

April 2012 - July 2014

I worked on a product owned by West Coast Labour Systems called Service-Link! There, I learned a lot of valuable skills and contributed to the automation of various processes.

I developed features on our Android, .NET WPF, and .NET Embedded applications, as well as Ant and Nant scripts that automated the release and tagging process for all of our Java and .NET projects.

Cerner Corporation

Software Engineer - Inpatient Pharmacy

August 2014 - September 2017

This was my first job after I had graduated from Eastern Washington University with a CS degree. With my Java and .NET experience, the Inpatient Pharmacy team really wanted me to join their team.

During my time as an engineer, I accomplished a great deal: I mentored many entry-level engineers in Cerner's DevAcademy training program, I built many foundational components of a brand new Worklist that was built in jQuery, Knockout, and Durandal, I lead our migration of our Java projects from SVN to Git, and I helped create some of the first performance tests for our Java services using JMeter.

Cerner Corporation

Team Lead | Sr. Software Engineer - Inpatient Pharmacy

October 2017 - September 2018

This was really the first major milestone in my career: in my first 1:1 with my first manager, I told him I wanted to lead people and projects alike, and I finally got my first opportunity to do so!

During my time as a Team Lead, I graduated from Cerner's DevArc technical leadership training program, lead a team of 4 entry-level engineers to complete projects for our medication verification processes, and was trained in Targeted Selection to start interviewing engineering candidates!

Cerner Corporation

Engineering Manager - Inpatient Pharmacy

October 2018 - March 2020

After 1 year of being a Team Lead, I was promoted to Engineering Manager! As an Engineering Manager for the Inpatient Pharmacy team, I continued leading our teams to successfully complete verification projects with a focus on quality and accuracy. I also worked directly with clients to diagnose and resolve performance problems with our reporting.

Cerner Corporation

Engineering Manager - Care Coordination

April 2020 - September 2021

During COVID, I made a couple of really big moves: I started working from home, and I also shifted teams to grow my technical leadership skills and exposure to Cerner's product portfolio.

As an Engineering Manager for Care Coordination, I got my first exposure to leading a CI/CD team. We developed various cloud-deployed services and products, written in Ruby, Java, and React. During my time there, I also developed a linting tool for OpenAPI/Swagger specifications to help identify deviations from API best practices, and I was also a speaker at Cerner's Developer Conference in 2021.

Storable

Engineering Manager - Marketplace

September 2021 - December 2023

With the confidence that I had gained from transitioning teams at Cerner, I made the tough decision to transition companies and went to work for Storable!

I was directly responsible for leading two agile teams of engineers to successfully deliver projects that had real-world impacts on Storable's bottom line and the experience for tenants and clients alike. I learned the importance of measuring our work through KPIs, moving fast, and being able to pivot when needed. We delivered on key initiatives that enabled us to retain thousands of stores on the SpareFoot network after one of our larger clients acquired the stores of another large client!

Storable

Staff Software Engineer - Platform

January 2024 - Present

After successfully leading people and projects for many years, I made the transition back to an individual contributor as a Staff Software Engineer on Storable's Platform team!

During my time as a Staff Software Engineer, I've worked on a number of initiatives that were key to reducing our costs and improving our security posture. I was able to use my Ruby on Rails and Node expertise to develop Storable's Electronic Document Siging offering, while also replacing Storable Edge's HelloSign integration with it, creating a more seamless experience for our customers, and saving Storable thousands anually. I've also developed many features within Storable's Single-Sign-On platform, created reusable libraries to help streamline common integration points with tools like BullMQ, and migrated our React component library to use Storable's new design system after the company updated it's branding strategy.

Sites

This is a list of some of the websites I've built over time. I've had great opportunities to work with amazing small businesses in the Kansas City area making their websites. In doing so I've been able to grow my skills as a web developer. Aside from what you see here, there's a bunch of stuff on Github, as well as some blogs on dev.to that I wrote before I created this site. Links to all that can be found at the footer of the page.

welcomebabykc.com

Welcome Baby KC is a small business in the Kansas City Metro that provides birth and postpartum doula services, as well as a variety of other maternity related services.

jamiesheart.org

humblecookieco.com

Humble Cookie Co. was my wife's cookie business, where she used her fantastic creative skills to create unique and gluten-free cookie creations.

Pebble Watchfaces

Remember pebble? The e-ink watch that took the world by storm about 10 years ago or so? I was in love with that thing... I had a Pebble Time, and it was one of the best little watches I ever had, and it never really cared if I was using an Apple or Android device.

The pebble community is still supported by a small group of folks that are propping up the pebble community, now called rebble. If you want to try out any of the watchfaces I made, you can download them onto your watch via rebble today!
